Killer of Slugs

Wow, it worked!!

I have this veggie garden growing in the back yard, and... I must say... by the height of my tomatoes and the spread of the zucchini and yellow squash, it's a pretty healthy garden! However, I've seen some evidence of slugs recently. Since this is basically year numero-uno of my garden, I'm not about to let some slugs eat the veggies of my labor.

So. I took the advice that I've heard many times in the past: Get a few pie tins, put beer in them, and place them in/near the garden. I placed one on each side of the planter box, and one in the middle of the veggies.... One of the plates outside of the box has a huge slug, and let me repeat - it is HUGE!!! A big fatty - DEAD! I think there might be a tiny slug in the tin that is IN the garden, but it was still fairly dark out and I didn't have my glasses on, so I need to go back out and check again.

Anyway... it really works! So go out, buy some cheap pie tins and some cheap beer (this fatty slug preferred Coors Light) that you can't imagine actually drinking yourself, fill up the pie tin (I used one small can o'beer for this particular tin), and wait.... or.... go to bed like I did, and check in the morning!

Yay!

Lots new, but not much, either

Ok, well I haven't posted in forever.... Surprise!!!

I'm done with nursing school as of March 18th, and passed the NCLEX on April 14th, so I'm actually a Registered Nurse now...
One without a job. So, within that bit of my life, a lot has changed, but also oh-so-little! That's OK, I'm workin' on it.

Aside from quilting, one thing I get to do now that I didn't have much time (or was it "energy?") for prior to graduation was my veggie garden... David has his herb garden, and I do the veggies. Well, I'm learning anyway! I've done fabulous tomatoes in the past, and tried some zucchini & yellow squash last summer (only got maybe 4 fruits...). We don't eat big tomato "plain," but I do like to make picante sauce with them.

Last year, when we were part of a local CSA, I used the tomato's for making fresh pasta sauce and it was amazing! So that is the reason for having.... Ummm... FIVE plants this year! Two of them are producing so far (none have ripened yet, but there are tons of fruits!), and I'm hoping for success on the other two as well. We'll see! In addition to tomato, I've also got 4 strawberries (not enough!), 2 pickling cucumber (can you also eat them w/out pickling them?), a yellow squash and a zucchini. OH, I also have 1 cantaloupe!

I didn't just buy and plant the stuff, but I also built the planter box! Ok, so what if it is just a couple of 2x12's cut up to make a rectangle... I DID IT! LOL. Now, I really need more! I could easily see myself filling up 2 or 3 more boxes next summer. We'll see if that happens, but 1 box (it is 4' x 8') is clearly not enough.

Ok, I guess that's it for now. I want to go find some lettuce plants, then I need to go buy the makings for macaroni salad...

Happy 4th of July, everyone. I hope it's a wonderful and safe day!
